The Transformative Power of Fire

“A plan without fire is scarcely a plan at all.” ~ Sam Poling, The Part that Doesn't Burn

I've always been enamored of fire. Not just because I come from a loooong line of firefighters (which is why you will never ever get a firefighter romance from me, btw–just can't think of my grandpa, dad, uncles, and brother that way!), but I also love the symbolism of fire.

Fiery passion has the power to both ignite and destroy. Fire keeps us warm, gives us life. But fire can also end life with a simple flicker of its beautiful flame.

So when a little book by the name of The Part that Doesn't Burn found its way onto my Kindle, I simply had to learn more. I'm not much of a fantasy reader, but I couldn't get this one out of my head, especially after reading the epilogue which brought the meaning of the title to light.

Isn't it nice to think that no matter how far gone we are, there's still a small part that doesn't–that won't–burn? It's about hope, about knowing that even when you burn a bridge, there still may be a path to get to the other side, if only you'll take a moment to look.

The symbolism is especially poignant in a book filled with fiery powers and threats of being burned upon the stake. This is a story filled with witches, magic, good, evil, so many things that excite–even a bit of humor thrown in for good measure. Need proof? This book trailer is probably the best I've ever seen!

Many books come and go, but Sam Poling's debut will stick with me as I continue to turn the title over and over in my mind, to think about the flames I thought had long been dowsed in my own life, and to search for those lingering parts that refused to succumb to the flame.

It's never too late to go back. It's never too late to go forward. Whether for good or for bad, there is always a part that doesn't burn. Life is never finished–chances are never gone–until we lay ourselves down for the final time and allow the fire to be dowsed once and for all.

What are some of your favorite sayings that have to do with fire? Will you be checking out The Part That Doesn't Burn for yourself? And did you watch that amazing trailer?
